Experience Aboriginal Australia

Australia is a land of rugged beauty and startling contrasts, with unique ecosystems that are home to a seemingly endless variety of indigenous plants and wildlife. It is also a land where recent growths of western civilisation have not managed to obscure the ancient and mysterious cultures that dwelled there tens of thousands of years before colonisation by the British. It is a land whose ancient past has been etched and painted on the walls of dark caves, towering cliffs and steep, weathered gorges; where a people who once lived in harmony with nature recorded a distinctive and highly artistic record of their history, their myths, their faith and their unique culture.

I hope you will join us as we discover the natural environments and ancient roots of this vast nation; as we search out the places where the Aboriginal people chronicled their lives and their reality; as we improve our understanding of the beliefs that sustained them, the dreams that inspired them and the artworks that have helped to preserve their valuable heritage.

The following travel options provide a brief overview of Aboriginal experiences available and touch on some of Australia's unique environments from the perspective of its original inhabitants. Art, story, song, law and lifestyle are all intrinsically linked and form the basis for some fascinating insights that present a different dimension to the usual views presented of Australia.

Further information on individual experiences will be provided after Diverse Travel Australia has spoken to you regarding the type of travel experience sought. All prices are on application.

Uluru (Ayers Rock) & Beyond
The Anangu

Anangu have lived at Uluru for many thousands of years and have developed a rich and vibrant culture that is derived from the Tjukurpa (creation law). They have an intricate understanding of the land, plants and animals of the region. Accompanied by Anangu guides you will gain an insight into the Anangu meaning and history of Uluru, as well as Aboriginal knowledge and lifestyle. This is a unique opportunity to learn first-hand the special cultural values of this World Heritage landscape.

The Pitjantjatjara

Small groups can visit communities in the spectacular Pitjantjatjara Lands and become involved in a range of activities and visits to significant sites.

Alice Springs and Surrounds
Back Track Tour

Born in Alice Springs your guides have established strong cultural ties with various Aboriginal groups. Both of Australian Aboriginal and pastoralist heritage, they provide a unique interpretation of the historical and ecological significance of the Central Australian area with their combined forty years of experience in leading tours.

Aboriginal Art, Culture and Nature Tours

For fourteen years your specialist arts adviser/guide was the art adviser for Aboriginal artists communities in the Northern Territory regions of Arnhem Land, Katherine and Central Australia. He now provides an advisory service to art buyers, film crews and photographers as well as organising cultural interactive experiences with Aboriginal people.

Katherine Region
Ingalari and the Lightening Brothers Rock Art Site

Your legendary guide takes you to Ingalari and the Lightening Brothers Rock Art Site. Dramatic and powerful, this is the main site for the creation heroes, Jabaringi and yagjagbula, who are the creators of lightening and of the nurturing monsoonal rains. The site also features a wide array of paintings and intricate engravings depicting the history of the Wardaman people from the period of the rainbow Serpent's creation up to the not-so-distant past when ships and mounted police troopers were sent to hunt down the Aboriginal people.

Manyallaluk The Dreaming Place

The Manyallaluk community, 100 km from Katherine, borders Arnhem Land, Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park and Kakadu National Park. Tours range from a one day hands-on cultural experience, a two day cultural adventure, to five day extended combination tours.

The Never Never Tour

This tour takes you into Never Never Country. You'll travel by 4WD via Mataranka to the famous Elsey Station and spend time swimming under remote waterfalls and lazing about thermal pools (said to be therapeutic). After lunch you meet the traditional Aboriginal landowners, the Mangarrayi, who were featured in Jeannie Gunn's famous Australian book and movie 'We of the Never Never'.

Arnhem Land
Mt Borradaile Safari Camp

During a trip into western Arnhem Land in the early 1980's your guide discovered ancient rock art sites of extraordinary beauty scattered in profusion throughout the area. Extensive, successful negotiations with the Aboriginal owners of Mt Borradaile in western Arnhem Land for the lease of 700 square kilometres of pristine wilderness followed. In 1986 your guide and his family opened their own safari camp operation. They have accepted guidance and instructions from the Aboriginal custodians regarding appropriate art sites for visitors to experience, the associated significance and stories of these sites and the identification and uses of the flora and fauna found in this rich, bio-diverse tour setting.

Tiwi Islands

The Tiwi are a sea people with a fierce strong cultural heritage that has successfully resisted the original European intrusions and remains a stronghold of cultural tradition manifested in their stunning art, independent outlook and adoption of Australian rules football as a Tiwi pastime practiced with religious fervour. Daily life still revolves strongly around harvesting the abundant marine foods from the island shores. Your visit will provide you with an insight to the main Tiwi community at Nguiu and explain some of the history of Tiwi creation, early European contact, conversion by catholic missionaries and modern Tiwi enterprises.

Kakadu National Park
Bunidj People

This is a special experience in one of the restricted areas of the superb Kakadu National Park. As part of the tour you visit Cannon Hill home of the Bunidj where you gain an insight into the relationships that exist between Aboriginal people of this country and their lands. You will experience all the varied aspects of the Kakadu environment, floodplains, billabongs, savanna woodland and the sandstone outliers of the stone country with their myriad of Aboriginal galleries.
