SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Salt Lakes to Sea Lions
This is one of South Australia's lesser known but truly spectacular
regions that is scalloped with beaches and small fishing villages; within
its interior lie the 1500 million year old little-known Gawler Ranges
escarpment. The Gawler Ranges are renowned for their remarkable geological
formations and abundant desert life interspersed with dazzling white salt
lakes. During our journey from the outback to the ocean we will visit
the most beautiful of salinas, Lake Gairdner, observe Bottlenose Dolphins
riding the bow wave of the MV Investigator, and swim with a colony of
rare Australian Sea-lions in a tranquil lagoon setting.

Day 1
Lake Gairdner
Depart Adelaide Airport, arriving in Whyalla at approximately 9:50am
where you will be met by your tour leader. From here we travel through
the outback en route to the dazzling and most beautiful of salinas, Lake
Garidner. The lake is 160 kms long and is the third largest salt lake
in Australia. Stephen Hack, the explorer who discovered the lake, described
it as one of the most spectacular features in the Australian landscape.
Its white, halite-encrusted bed is rimmed with red hills, red beaches
and lunettes, and fringed with the shimmering pale green of mulga and
myall bushes. We may possibly sight emus and kangaroos. This evening enjoy
a bush barbeque dinner. We overnight at the Wudinna Motel.
Optional bush camp accommodation at Kangaroo Camp in the Gawler Ranges including a night drive to see Wombats is available.
Day 2
Baird's Bay
Travel to Tyringa Beach and follow the spectacular coastline to
Baird's Bay where we board the MV Investigator for an unforgettable
wildlife experience. On the 5 kilometre journey to Cape Radstock
(at 160 metres, it is one of the highest shear points on the
southern coast of Australia) we can watch Bottlenose Dolphins
ride the bow wave of the boat and join these magnificent mammals
in shallow water. We then cross the Bay to Jones Island, an
island conservation park dedicated to the preservation of
the Australian Sea-lion, one of the rarest seal species. As
we walk across the reef the Sea-lions slowly make their way
over to us. Fitted out in wet suits (optional) and face masks
we enjoy an incredible one to one experience with these animals,
on their terms, in the shallow lagoons that are their home.
After lunch, we visit coastal villages and enjoy magnificent
scenery on the way to Port Lincoln. This evening you return to Adelaide
by plane.
