Australian Sea Lions

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Ocean to Outback

South Australia's most dramatic coastline occurs around the Eyre Peninsula, a great triangular wedge thrust into the Southern Ocean. The east coast, facing Spencer Gulf, is scalloped with beaches and small fishing villages; on the more rugged west coast, the fury of the sea has hewn 100-metre cliffs along the edge of the limestone plains. This is one of South Australia's lesser known but truly spectacular regions offering some of the most dramatic coastal scenery to be found anywhere in Australia. During our journey we will visit secluded coves, vast sandy beaches and picturesque fishing villages and may sight seabirds such as the White-breasted Sea-Eagle and Osprey. An unforgettable highlight of this itinerary is swimming with Australian Sea-lions in a tranquil lagoon setting.

Day 1
Port Lincoln to Wudinna

Fly from Adelaide to Port Lincoln where you embark on a 4WD journey to Wudinna a small town of 600 people. We will visit Wudinna Rock as we travel into the bush to Mt Sturt and the Corribinnie Lakes. Your wildlife experience begins here as the outback animals thrive in this environment. Along the way you get the chance to have some fun and paint your face with the multi coloured ocre rock as the Aboriginal people did to decorate themselves for ceremonies. After dinner we take a drive and spot wombats and other nocturnal wildlife.
Overnight at Kangaroo Camp with a bush dinner.

Day 2
Lake Gairdner and Gawler Ranges

Today we drive to the dazzling and most beautiful of salinas, Lake Garidner. The lake is 160 kms long and is the third largest salt lake in Australia. Stephen Hack, the explorer who discovered the lake, described it as one of the most spectacular features in the Australian landscape. Its white, halite-encrusted bed is rimmed with red hills, red beaches and lunettes, and fringed with the shimmering pale green of mulga and myall bushes. See emus and kangaroos, ( Reds, Western Greys and Euros) this evening as we drive through the ancient outback and a private sheep station along a Gorge back to Kangaroo Camp.

Day 3
Gawler Ranges to Venus Bay

Mornings are leisurely and allow plenty of time to walk through the bush looking for some of the 146 species of birds recorded here. Today we will see Wedge Tailed Eagles nests, cigar shaped volcanic rock formations 1500 million years old, the magnificent Organ Pipes Amphitheater and lots of wildlife. Afternoon we travel to Venus Bay to enjoy the spectacular coastal scenery. You will have time to walk the south headland and watch the dolphins play in the entrance to the bay. Overnight in a beach house and dinner at a small country hotel.

Day 4
Baird Bay to Port Lincoln

This morning we board the MV Investigator for the short 5 km [3 mile] trip to Jones Island, an island conservation park dedicated to the preservation of the Australian Sea Lion, one of the rarest seal species. We may be fortunate to be accompanied by dolphins on the way, as often happens! As we walk across the reef the Sea-lions slowly make their way over to us. Fitted out in wet suits and face masks we enjoy an incredible one to one experience with these animals, on their terms, in the shallow lagoons that are their home. After lunch on the boat we leave Baird Bay for Venus Bay and on to Port Lincoln for your return flight to Adelaide.
