Remarkable Rocks

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Kangaroo Island

Some 30 minutes by air southwest of Adelaide, Kangaroo Island is a microcosm of a very diverse continent. It has many of the images people readily associate with Australia- - abundant native wildlife, wide open spaces, clean air, beautiful wildflowers, a rugged coastline with pounding waves, white sandy beaches, clear water perfect for scuba diving, rolling farmland dotted with sheep and cattle. The Islands red dirt roads are its signature and signal the lush gentleness of the island.

The unique wildlife is plentiful as well as remarkable - an endemic sub-species of kangaroo, tammar wallabies, Australian sealions, New Zealand furseals, koalas, echidnas, platypus, goannas, 243 species of birds including many rare or endangered species, possums, bandicoots and even whales during winter.

This wide range of flora and fauna are well protected with over 30% of the Island part of a National Park or Conservation Park. Freedom from many of the introduced pests that plague mainland Australia, especially the European rabbit and red fox, has meant that the Island had retained much of what it had prior to European settlement.

A lack of indigenous human population for much of the Last 20,000 years, and particularly the past 2,500 years has meant that the environment has developed in the absence of both continuous hunting pressure and a frequent fire regime. All of these factors combined with a high percentage of remnant native vegetation make Kangaroo Island a rare place.

Day 1
Morning flight to Kangaroo Island. Pennington Bay, Cape Willoughby.

You will be taken by private transport to Adelaide Airport for your flight to Kangaroo Island. Your guide will meet you at Kingscote Airport and provide an introduction and orientation to Kangaroo Island, describing its history and topography. One of the most important features of the Island is its wildlife in their natural habitats. Freedom from many of the introduced pests that plagued mainland Australia, especially the European rabbit and red fox, has meant that the Island has retained much of its original identity and fauna. You will be taken in a 4WD and hopefully see Kangaroo Island kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, sea lions, Tamar wallabies, a variety of bird life, wildflowers and eucalyptus forests. Each season offers something different.

Today you tour the eastern part of the Island. Discover Frenchman's Rock where a French Sailor etched details of the visit on one of the basalt rocks. Travel to Cape Willoughby at the most easterly point of the Island, via Antechanmber Bay, a pristine white sandy beach. Lunch is a gourmet picnic arranged in the most suitable setting for the day; in the bush with koalas or by the sea.

The main feature of your touring is to view wildlife in the wild and taking side trips off the beaten track to encounter natural bushland sanctuaries away from the mainstream tourist track. B/L/D

Day 2
Seal Bay, Flinders Chase National Park

Your second day on the Island takes in more of the Island's exciting wildlife experiences and highlights of the Island. You visit Seal Bay, home of the Australian sea lion, and then go off the beaten track onto private properties to enjoy wildlife in wild places including Flinders Chase National Park - 74,000 hectares of natural bushland. The Park includes the natural rock formations of Remarkable Rocks (a spectacular cliff top granite sculpture carved by the elements of millions of years) and Admirals Arch (a spectacular natural archway). You will be delighted by the antics of the New Zealand fur seals of the surrounding headlands. One of the last stops for the day is the habitat of the kangaroo and time is spent exploring their environment and enjoying the peace and tranquillity in the hope of seeing them come out to graze.
