SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Flinders Ranges

Rugged Outback Scenery and Aboriginal Culture

The Flinders Ranges are considered by most vistors to be Australia's best arid mountain range. The Ranges stretch for over 1 200 kilometres from the edge of St Vincent's Gulf just north of Adelaide, the gracious capital of South Australia, to the horseshoe ring of great salt lakes to the north. The northern extreme of the range was named Mt Hopeless by a frustrated pioneer explorer.

Small towns frozen in time, vast sheep stations, ruins of failed settlements, caves and rock walls filled with the painted and etched art works of the original Aboriginal inhabitants, hundreds of kilometres of hiking trails, untrammelled wilderness, bountiful pockets of wildlife, quartzite ridges and jagged peaks that are now just the eroded stumps of a once mighty range, rivers of rocks and sand subject to flash floods during the summer cloudbursts and deep cool gorges are just some of the varied delights of this range reaching into the classical Outback. Its pre Cambrian origins 750 million years ago make for a fascinating journey through geological time with the Ediacaran fossils recognised as one of the world's oldest marine fauna.

Descendants of the traditional Aboriginal Adnyamathanha still live in the Ranges and a few small groups have taken to sharing their knowledge and culture with the growing number of visitors. They will tell you about the Dreaming songlines of the great ancestor beings such as the giant snake, the Arkaroo, that formed many of the features of the land, or explain the many wild food and medicinal plants providing a fascinating insight that places a different perspective on the unique experience that is the Flinders Ranges.

Day 1
Adelaide to Flinders Ranges

Depart Adelaide (light aircraft) early morning for your one hour flight to Pt Augusta - met by guide.

Travel to Parachilna (population 7) and enjoy morning tea at the Prairie Hotel renowned for its innovative accommodation and high quality indigenous food. As you journey back through time at Brachina Gorge where millions of years of history, geological sequences and the oldest fossils of animal life on Earth are preserved, your geologist guide will explain the significance of this area. Walk parts of the "Corridors Through Time" Geological Trail where you discover the beginnings of life on Earth contained within the rocks of the trail. This is the home of the Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby which you may sight. A picnic lunch is provided at the Aroona Ruins.

For those travellers wanting less time exploring the geology of the area and more time sightseeing, you can travel to Stokes Hill Lookout for a scenic view of the Flinders Ranges and visit Bunyeroo Gorge. Alternately, travel to Wilpena Pound for a short walk then take the Morolana Scenic Drive route back to the Prairie Hotel. L

Day 2
Red Gorge, Leigh Creek, Beltana & Copley

Travel to Red Gorge, an Aboriginal engraving site, where you meet an Aboriginal Adnyamathanha elder who shares his culture with you and hosts your BBQ or picnic lunch. Travel back to Copley inspecting an ochre deposit en route. Experience a quick tour of the small township of Leigh Creek before heading south to an interesting fossil site. Afterwards you visit the historic town of Beltana and the Aroona Dam where you may again sight the Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby. B/L

Day 3
Iga Warta & Arkaroola

Depart early to visit the small outstation Aboriginal community of Iga Warta, home of the Native Orange, where the Coulthard's have established a unique family enterprise to share their land and culture. Here you have the opportunity with your Aboriginal hosts to horse ride, take a bush tucker excursion, hunt for Kangaroo, hear Dreaming stories or participate in a discussion on the social history of the region - the choice is yours! There may be the opportunity to taste Kangaroo or a Quandong (wild peach) pie during morning tea. Afterwards, visit the Mulkai painting site to hear more stories followed by lunch at Iga Warta. After lunch travel via Italowie Gap to Balcanoona National Park and then onto Arkaroola Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary where you spend the night. The Sanctuary is a 610 square kilometre property of spectacular rugged mountains in South Australia's remote 'Outback' offering a unique range of nature and science based tours and activities. If weather/time permits you may like to participate in an Astronomical Observatory Tour as the stars are at their best out here! B/L

Day 4
Arkaroola & Surrounds

This morning take a Ridgetop Tour through some of Australia's most spectacular country. Originally a mining exploration access track, this Ridgetop track commands views rarely available to any but the lone prospector or field geologist. In all directions extend spectacular views of towering Granite Mountains, some clothed in spinifex, others bare in ragged red granite. Hanging rocks, deep shaded chasms, and serrated peaks abound in all directions.

After lunch there is the opportunity to take a scenic flight over the area, explore old mines, tracks and waterholes, photograph some interesting formations including The Pinnacles, take a walk along Acacia Ridge or just relax by the pool. B

Day 5
Sightseeing & Return Flight to Adelaide

Depart Arkaroola early and visit Barraranna Gorge, Stubb's Waterhole and an ochre wall. This route can provide good opportunities for wildlife viewing. You then visit the lesser known engraving site of Manyi travelling via Mt McTaggart and Wortupa Well. There is the opportunity to visit Grindell's Hut for a story and view of the Gammon Ranges, home to deep gorges, rocky plains, steep mountains and stony rivers. The environment here is similar to the Flinders Ranges, but more isolated and arid. Arrive in Pt. Augusta in time to meet your early evening flight back to Adelaide. B/L
