Snowy River Secrets

A five day wildlife and botanical journey into the heart of far East Gippsland, a spectacular and remote region of secluded rivers, rainforests, wild ocean beaches and abundant wildlife in southern Australia. This visit will rejuvenate and refresh you as you are immersed in wild and spacious beauty.

A classic journey of contrasts in wilderness equal to the best in the world. Our vehicle supported expedition visits the most remote region of south-eastern Australia - an unspoilt wilderness of rugged mountains, deep, pure rivers, dense rainforest and abundant wildlife. Highlights of this trip the dry, plunging ramparts of the Snowy River Gorge, the deepest in Australia; and the upland rainforests of Errinundra Plateau. Naturalist guides provide interpretation of the environment and indigenous culture and we visit local people on remote farms. Road travel is minimised with the maximum time spent on a wide variety of bush-based experiences and walks.

Day 1
Buchan Caves: Easing into the wilderness

Depart from Melbourne to the tiny rural town of Buchan where we explore the magnificent limestone formations of Buchan Caves before we take our first walk with wild kangaroos and other wildlife. Accommodation tonight is in a local hotel or motel. (L,D)

Day 2
Snowy River National Park: In the rainshadow of the Alps

Explore the wilderness of the Snowy River National Park shielded from rain under the lee of the Australian Alps, dry and precipitous in the extreme. This region contains some of Australia's most remote and spectacular scenery and its deepest gorge. In the cooler months waterfalls crash hundreds of metres from the surrounding plateau into the valley of the Snowy. We walk local trails, learn about Aboriginal cultural traditions and, in warmer months, swim the waters of the Snowy River. Tonight we camp in the famous Snowy River Valley and learn about the Aboriginal people of this area. (B,L,D)

Day 3
Errinundra National Park: Rainforests and wildlife

Travel out of the dry Snowy valley to Errinundra National Park, a nearby plateau covered in ancient eucalypts and upland rainforests - a dramatic contrast of environments. We stroll with care through a delicate and sweet scented cool-temperate rainforest and search for the elusive Wombat and Lyre-bird. Massive eucalypts tower over us as we return to camp for dinner followed by an enchanting evening spotlighting for nocturnal animals including the Yellow-bellied Glider. (B,L,D)

Day 4
From the Rainforests to the Wilderness Coast

Our journey from Errinundra to the coast today is one of Australia's best forest journeys - through cool then warm temperate rainforest, stopping at secret locations to enjoy the magnificent scenery. We walk high up to the top of Errinundra Plateau through cathedral-like eucalypt forests before travelling on to the Wilderness Coast against the Southern Ocean, passing the mouth of the Snowy River. Tonight's accommodation is at another delightful Bed and Breakfast beside the lower reaches of the famous Snowy River. (B,L,D)

Day 5
Transfer to Melbourne (vehicle or train). (B,L)
