9 DAY WEST KIMBERLEY INDIGENOUS LIFESTYLE
AND CULTURE: Western Australia
Emphasis: West Kimberley landforms and seascapes and indigenous lifestyle
and culture.
This itinerary provides you with a rare opportunity to view spectacular
West Kimberley landforms and seascapes. You will have the chance to experience
at close hand Kimberley indigenous lifestyle and culture. This is a tour
for those with a genuine interest in the Aboriginal culture of the West
Kimberley. Accommodation throughout is comfortable and basic.
The Dampier Peninsula offers unspoiled coastline and tranquil community
settings. Your hosts will be Bardi people from a small picturesque community
settlement nestled behind the sand dunes of the wide and captivating Indian
Ocean. This is your chance to meet with the locals who will teach you
fishing and food collecting techniques, tell you about the rich and diverse
history and traditions of the area and of the special relationship between
the Peninsula people, the land and the sea.
On your inland excursion you will be hosted by a member of the Bunuba
Aboriginal language group. Bunuba people are the traditional owners of
land that includes Fitzroy Crossing and stretches in a northerly and northeasterly
direction. Bunuba land contains extensive cattle country and the well-known
350 million-year-old Devonian reef system that gives rise to the west
Kimberley icons of Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Gieke Gorge. It extends
from the open black soil plains in the west to the rugged King Leopold
Ranges in the east, straddling the divide between the west Kimberley plains
and the Kimberley Plateau. Bunuba people hold leases to the Fairfield,
Leopold Downs and Millie Windie cattle stations. The Windjana Gorge and
Tunnel Creek National Parks are contained within Bunuba land.
