14 Day ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIA
From South to Centre
Not five star accommodation and no extra frills but a wonderful
way to experience Australia through the eyes of both Aboriginal
and non Aboriginal people who are happy to share their culture
and landscape with you and to experience the friendship and
camaraderie of the outback.
Emphasis: Aboriginal culture, outback Australia (generally
off the beaten track) from Adelaide to Alice Springs, small
group touring, multi lingual guides (if required).
Australia's original inhabitants, the Aboriginals, are unique.
A rich heritage of traditional knowledge, practice and belief
underpin a dynamic contemporary society which, as a rule,
is superficially presented as stereotypical images of the
painted dancers, silhouetted noble hunters and laughing children,
usually from northern Australia. You reach beyond this veneer
of mainstream travel to attain a greater contact and understanding
of what Australian Aboriginal culture is truly about.
Your journey will touch on some of Australia's unique environments
in both southern and central Australia and starts with a kaleidoscope
of light and shade over water, dune and sky. This is the internationally
recognised wetlands of the Coorong in South Australia created
by the ancestral hero Ngurunderi in the Dreamtime. The 'Coorong',
an Aboriginal word meaning 'narrow neck', is a perfect description
for its shallow lagoons stretching south for 135 kilometres
from the mouth of the Murray River and protected from the
Southern Ocean by the Young Husband Peninsula, a narrow strip
of high sand dunes. The Coorong has no equivalent in the World.
In startling contrast is the red rock gorges and ramparts
of the spectacular rugged Flinders Ranges considered to be
Australia's best arid mountain range and the home of the rare
Yellow-footed Rock-Wallaby. From here your journey takes you
across the vast flat expanses of desert to the shores of Lake
Eyre, the lowest point and the largest salt lake in Australia
and you will be fascinated to learn how Aboriginals lived
in the area. On the rare occasion when water from the Channel
country empties into the Lake the wildlife to be seen is staggering.
Then on to the moonscape that is Coober Pedy where the way
people live has to be seen to be believed. For the finale
you travel through the rolling red dunes of the central Australian
desert to an Australian icon at Uluru at the Rock, where you
will marvel at the spectacular colour changes as the sun sets.
Then onto Kings Canyon, Central Australia's deepest gorge
before finishing at Alice Springs.
