NORTH EAST ARNHEMLAND EXPERIENCE

Nhulunbuy and the Gove Peninsula are one of the hidden secrets of mysterious Arnhem Land. Here two worlds are thrown into a fascinating contrast. Despite the original resistance of the Aboriginal inhabitants, a mining agreement in this beautiful location in the wilderness has culminated into one of the world’s largest bauxite mines and aluminium smelters. The resulting infrastructure has led to a modern town of 4,000 people with all facilities in the very heartland of traditional Aboriginal land and culture.

This provides a unique opportunity for an insight both into the stunning coastal and hinterland scenery and a powerful traditional culture. The Buku Larrangay Mulka Art Centre and Museum at the Aboriginal community of Yirrkala house one of the best collections of bark paintings including the famous church panels which are a unique statement connecting art to land unlike anything ever produced in Aboriginal Australia. This is also the home of the Yidaki (Dijeridu) and source for some of the very best bark, carving, lino cuts and weaving showcasing artistic expression in Arnhem Land. The Nambarra Art Centre in Nhulunbuy provides equally fine work but in more contemporary mediums including works on paper, prints and ceramics. The golden beaches, red stained headlands, rolling surf and diverse coastal forest landscape dissected by flowing freshwater rivers is testimony to the richness and diversity of this environment. This experience will provide a rare glimpse of one of the strongest remaining Aboriginal traditional lifestyles in northern Australia.
