THE IGA WARTA EXPERIENCE The Flinders Ranges and its
Adnyamathanha people
This spectacular arid mountain range stretches from the shores
of Spencer Gulf north into the dry outback of South Australia.
The northern half of the Ranges are the domain of the Adnyamathanha
- the stone people. This is a landscape with a rich cultural
overlay and many of its most dramatic landforms are the results
of great deeds by creation heroes, such as the Arkaroo, a
great serpent who formed the main features of this range.
Today the Adnyamathanha will guide you along the ancient creation
paths, explain the food and medicine plants, introduce you
to the many engraving and painting sites and share their traditional
and contemporary story. This provides a fascinating insight
into one of the hidden gems of the Australian natural and
cultural landscapes.
