TUNNELS AND GORGES OF THE WEST KIMBERLEY
Two day tours that include a one night stop over at a base camp near
to the remote area community of Biridu on Leopold Downs Station. As a
passenger on this tour you will spend the first day exploring the wonders
of the spectacular Devonian reef. You will visit the majestic Tunnel Creek,
following its path as it cuts its way through the Napier Range. You will
marvel at the vertical cliff faces and rock formations of Windjana Gorge
and in the cooler months observe, at close range, the fresh water crocodiles
as they bask in the sun on the sand banks. You will visit the ruins of
the Lillmaloora police outpost and follow in the footsteps of Jandamarra,
a Bunuba freedom fighter who, in the 1890s, led one of Australias
most intensive resistances to the take up of traditional lands by European
settlers.
Day 1
On the morning of day one you will travel for one to two hours across
the Aboriginal owned cattle station of Leopold Downs before reaching a
base camp near to the Biridu community. Now "off the beaten track",
you will be able to reflect on the day and share camp fire stories of
life as it was and as it is now in this part of the Kimberley.
Accommodation at the camp will be tents and swags. Those with a taste
for the open air can sleep under the stars. All sleeping arrangements
including swag, linen, pillows and rugs are provided. Arrangements at
the camp will be basic but bush toilet and shower facilities will be available.
Day 2
The pace will be slower on day two. This is an opportunity to get to
know your hosts and the local country. To learn of traditional survival
skills used in this area. To explore old living areas and historic sites
and to gain an Aboriginal perspective on life and landform. The two day
itinerary is flexible to accommodate the varied wishes of visitors.
Mid to late afternoon on day two you will be delivered back to your accommodation
at Fitzroy Crossing.
